Privacy Policy
Last updated: 15 October 2024. This policy explains how Makutuu Freight Inc. collects, uses, and protects personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy legislation.
About this document
This Privacy Policy applies to all personal information collected by Makutuu Freight Inc. ("Makutuu", "we", "us") through our website at makutuu.com, through telephone and email communications, and through the provision of cross-border freight, customs brokerage, and related logistics services. By using this website or engaging our services, you acknowledge the practices described here.
Questions & Answers
What personal information does Makutuu collect?
We collect the information you provide directly when using our contact form, requesting a quote, or communicating with us: your name, email address, telephone number, and company name. For active freight engagements, we may also collect shipper and consignee details, cargo descriptions, and business registration information required for customs filings. We do not collect payment card data through this website.
Why do you collect this information?
We collect personal information for three purposes. First, to respond to your enquiries and provide freight, customs clearance, and logistics services you request. Second, to fulfil legal obligations — cross-border freight and customs brokerage require us to include shipper and consignee information in regulatory filings with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and foreign customs authorities. Third, to communicate with you about the progress of your shipment and, where you have consented, about relevant service updates.
Do you share my information with third parties?
We share personal information only as necessary to deliver the services you have engaged. This includes licensed trucking carriers, bonded warehousing operators, freight forwarding partners in destination countries, and government customs authorities (CBSA, CBP, and equivalent agencies in destination countries). We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information to any third party for marketing purposes. Any third party we work with is contractually required to handle your information only for the purpose for which it was shared.
Is my information transferred outside Canada?
For cross-border shipments, information about your cargo and your identity as shipper or consignee must be transmitted to customs and border authorities in the destination country. This is a legal requirement of international freight movement and is not optional. For shipments to the United States, this means transmission of certain data to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) via the ACE eManifest system. We cannot guarantee that foreign governments handle this information under Canadian privacy standards.
How long do you keep my information?
Contact and enquiry records are retained for two years from the date of last contact or the completion of a service engagement, whichever is later. Customs and freight documentation is retained for seven years as required under the Customs Act and Canada Revenue Agency requirements. After these periods, records are securely destroyed. You may request earlier deletion of non-regulated information by contacting us.
What cookies does this website use?
This website uses a single functional cookie to record your cookie consent preference (stored under the key "cookieConsent" in your browser's localStorage). This is not a tracking cookie and does not identify you personally. We do not use advertising cookies, third-party analytics, or cross-site tracking of any kind. No data from localStorage is transmitted to our servers.
What are my rights under PIPEDA?
Under PIPEDA, you have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to request access to that information, to correct inaccuracies, and to withdraw consent to certain uses (except where we are legally required to retain or use the information). To exercise any of these rights, contact our Privacy Officer at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.
How do you protect my information?
This website is served exclusively over HTTPS. Contact form submissions are sent to a third-party endpoint for processing and are not stored on our web server. Internal records containing personal information are stored in access-controlled systems available only to authorised Makutuu staff. Physical documents containing personal information are stored in locked facilities and disposed of by cross-cut shredding.
How do I make a complaint about how my information was handled?
Contact our Privacy Officer first at [email protected]. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate your complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at www.priv.gc.ca or by calling 1-800-282-1376.
Can this policy change?
Yes. We may update this policy when our practices change or when legal requirements are amended. The updated date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated by a notice on the homepage for 30 days following the change. Continued use of our services after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
